The grand opening of the first Minecraft theme park is coming soon, based off the popular video game. Originally released in 2009, this 3D sandbox adventure game allows players to gather resources to craft tools and build structures, all while defeating monsters.
In 2025, a live-action film based on the game was released, starring Jack Black, which quickly became a box office success. The sequel is set to release in 2027 with Kirsten Dunst joining the cast.
However, it won’t be long until you can do more than view Minecraft on a screen. Mojang Studios, the game developer, is currently working to bring the franchise to life. Minecraft World, an immersive new theme park inspired by the game’s most iconic biomes and items, is being built in Chessington World of Adventures in Greater London.
The senior creative director of entertainment at Minecraft, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, calls the park: “A place where you can literally be in the Minecraft Overworld and have an adventure of your own with your family and friends. The team at Merlin Entertainments and Mojang have worked hard to craft an experience that feels immersive, authentic and welcoming, and we can't wait for our community to experience it.”
This $70 million project is going to include a thrilling roller coaster, block built playscapes, interactive adventures, and themed retail and dining. Concept art released by Mojang Studios includes wooden houses, TNT blocks, and Creepers. Of course, there’s also a gift shop filled with themed merch.
The family-friendly vacation spot is another park directly inspired by IP, like Super Nintendo World in Universal Epic Universe where you can visit Peach’s Castle, eat Fire Flower Spaghetti at Toadstool Café, and ride Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge.
Minecraft World will be a 35-minute train ride away from London Waterloo. Additional details are currently being kept under wraps.
