On April 13, Sony Pictures made a major announcement at CinemaCon, an annual gathering for the motion picture theater industry. It was revealed that a film based on the popular video game Bloodborne is in the works. The film, which will be animated and rated-R, is being produced by PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and YouTuber Jacksepticeye, whose real name is Seán McLoughlin.
Although there’s not much known about the film at this time, Bloodborne is a popular 2015 game that tells the story of a hunter who explores a gothic world that is plagued by a disease that turns inhabitants into monsters. It has won several awards, including Game of the Year by multiple outlets.
Most fans were shocked by the reveal, joking about how April Fool’s Day was weeks ago. However, most are intrigued by the idea. One comment on Reddit said, “Wondering what animation style they’ll use, anime-style hand drawn or CGI like the video game (ex Super Mario Bros The Movie).”
Other fans are concerned about how the story will translate to the big screen. “Hope it’s not as bad as the comics,” one user said. “The Dark Souls/Bloodborne comics just aren’t as intriguing with the story style. A lot of the appeal is the cryptic, out of your way storytelling.”
Although many are excited for the film, especially with Jacksepticeye involved, a lot of fans agreed that they would have preferred another game in the Bloodborne universe to an adaptation of the original game. “I can’t believe we got a YouTuber produced film before we got a sequel,” one said.
Jacksepticeye, 36, is a beloved Irish YouTuber who started uploading videos in 2012. He has over 31 million subscribers with more than 5,000 videos on his channel where he plays video games, completes Try Not to Laugh challenges, and reacts to TikTok videos and memes.
