Many A-list stars flooded the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on the evening of Sunday, September 14, to attend the 2025 Emmys. Unfortunately, one popular star was not in attendance due to an unexpected medical issue. Sofia Vergara, of hit shows like Modern Family and America’s Got Talent, was forced to miss the star-studded event.
Vergara turned to Instagram that evening to reveal to fans the surprising reason why she was not in attendance at the award show. She had to go to the emergency room instead.
“Didn’t make it to the Emmys but made it to the ER 🤣😩,” she wrote in the caption of her post, sharing a close-up image of her face. The image showed that one of her eyes was badly swollen and red.
She explained that the reaction was from a “crazy” eye allergy and that she hadn’t made the decision to skip the Emmys until right before she was set to get into the car and leave for the event.
“Sorry I had to cancel!” she wrote.
Vergara also shared several videos taken while she was in the hospital, including one that showed her using an eye wash station to cleanse the irritated eye.
Vergara didn’t share whether the condition could have been caused by cosmetics she used while getting ready or some other kind of irritant. However, the lighthearted caption filled with laughing emojis seemed to suggest she’s doing better now.

Vergara has been nominated for an Emmy five different times for various projects. She was expected to present at this year's award show.
