In the latest episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim opened up about her interest in criminal justice reform and how she and her legal team select inmates they believe deserve clemency.
"I told my dad years ago that I was really into criminal justice and he was like, 'This will stress you out so much. You do not really want to take this on,'" Kim explained to Kris, while sorting through a stack of letters she's received from inmates. "But I think now, having gotten so deep in helping Alice, I'm really motivated to get to know the law more and fight for people that deserve a second chance, like her."
In the past year, Kardashian has gradually started shifting the focus away from her multimedia empire, and towards her interest in law and order. Her most notable effort occurred in 2018 when she met with fellow reality star Donald Trump, and convinced the president to grant clemency to Alice Marie Johnson, a grandmother who was handed a life sentence without parole for a first-time, non-violent drug charge.
"If I see [a story] that I feel like has a real shot and moves me, then I'll send it to my attorneys that look over everything to make sure that it's legitimate," Kim told her mother in the new episode. Kris then asked about the clemency process, and why Kim sends certain letters to her legal team. "So, they examine the case and make sure that [clemency is] even something that's possible?" Kris asked, which Kim affirmed. However, she noted that clemency processes can often take between seven and 10 years.
The success Kim experienced with Alice Johnson inspired her to become more knowledgeable in legal matters. The beauty mogul then announced in her VogueMay cover story that she's studying to be a lawyer. The public's response was predictably split, with some encouraging her newfound career path, while others scoffed at the idea that Kim could apply herself to something intellectually challenging.
