Trump Grants Clemency to Alice Marie Johnson After Meeting With Kim Kardashian

"So grateful to President Trump, Jared Kushner & to everyone who has showed compassion & contributed countless hours to this important moment," Kardashian wrote. "Her commutation is inspirational & gives hope to so many others who are also deserving of a second chance."

It looks like Kim Kardashian West's meeting with President Donald Trump went well, as clemency has been officially granted for Alice Marie Johnson, the woman whose release the reality star has been advocating for since last year, Mic reports. 63-year old Johnson has been in an Alabama prison since 1996, serving a life sentence, without the chance for parole, for a first-time, non-violent drug offense.

After Kim became aware of Johnson's story last fall, she enlisted her own lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, to help with a clemency petition. Since then, Kim has spoken to President Trump's son-in-law/White House senior adviser Jared Kushner about the case, which eventually ended up in front of White House lawyers and the President himself. Shortly after Kim's meeting with Trump, she said he "really spent the time to listen to our case that we were making for Alice," also adding she was "very hopeful that this will turn out really positively."

After the meeting, Johnson even sent Kim Kardashian a letter to express her gratitude over her efforts. Now, a week after the meeting, Johnson will walk free after over 21 years in prison.

Johnson was convicted in 1996 after helping to facilitate communication in a Memphis cocaine operation, and sentenced to life without parole plus an additional 25 years. Despite her fate, Johnson went on to become a playwright, minister and mentor. She was also given permission to have video calls outside the prison, including ones to Ivy League school students and employees at companies like Google.

Kardashian plans to get more involved in prison reform and sees Johnson's release as the first of many obstacles to come. "I think it’s definitely a bigger issue that has to be addressed, and I’m glad that I’m starting with her," she said.
