Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse is releasing sooner than expected

Sony, the studio behind the highly anticipated second sequel in its popular Spider-Verse series, has moved the release date to June 18, 2027, according to Hollywood Reporter.

That’s one week ahead of its previously announced June 25 release date. The decision to bring it forward might have something to do with positioning it nearer to two holidays: Father’s Day and Juneteenth.

The move could be a more aggressive play, though. It’ll land one week after Universal’s live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2, eating into that film’s second weekend. The two films share a similar audience demographic.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is now set to open on the same day as Disney’s animated adventure Gatto. With little fanfare so far for Gatto, Sony will be liking its chances of winning the box office war.

The Spider-Verse series has been massively successful, both critically and commercially. The first, 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, grossed $384 million globally, and won the Oscar for best animated feature.

It also won big with reviewers, earning 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised its striking animation, bold storytelling, and big-hearted humor. 2023’s Across the Spider-Verse surpassed it financially, if not critically. It got $690 million worldwide, and 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. That means combined, the two films grossed over a billion.

Beyond the Spider-Verse concludes the trilogy, with Peter Parker’s successor Miles Morales banding together with other Spider-Man variants from different universes to save the multiverse.

“We got to make you wait a little bit,” Brian Tyree Henry, who voices Miles’ father Jefferson, told Variety back in February 2024. “You know what I mean? But it’s coming. It’s coming. There’s not going to be a dry eye in the house. I’ll tell you that. Good luck. It’s not going to wrap up in a nice little bow what things do.”

The last film left off with Miles encountering a dark version of himself. He’ll be his own worst enemy when Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse releases June 18, 2027.
