Three teens are facing first-degree murder charges for the death of a popular radio host.
KMBC reports that Aaron Johnson, Mark Nash Junior, and Marquel McGee, all of whom are 18, have been arrested after fatally shooting James “Uncle Jimmy” Dodds outside his home in Kansas City, Kansas on Sunday.
Officers responded to the scene at around 7:15 p.m. Dodds was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died on Monday.
"Some of his family members knew the individuals. So, it stemmed from a disagreement. But once again, we're seeing people's inability to control their anger," KCK Police Chief Karl Oakman said, per the news outlet.
Dodds’ landlord, Michelle Karanja, told KMBC that Dodds was shot while sitting in his car.
"My husband was home working on the deck, and he heard three gunshots go off, and he started looking around for it. And then soon after, the ambulance and everything showed up," she said.
Karanja revealed that Dodds’ two sons, who lived with their father, are now moving in with their mother. "It's very surprising to have a shooting happen here. He was a very good tenant. We never had any problems with him. It was very quiet over there. It's certainly a tragedy," Karanja said.
The 64-year-old was a well-known sports talk radio personality. He worked with former TV and podcast host Jason Whitlock, who remembered Dodds on his show Fearless on Tuesday.
“Jimmy was a great friend. Jimmy did the best that he could. Jimmy was talented,” Whitlock said. “Jimmy had great intentions... Jimmy I just want to say job well done and we will miss you and certainly loved you.”
