Our girl Tiffany Haddish will host the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards, the first black woman to emcee the award show.
MTV revealed Thursday that the Girls Trip star, stand-up comedian, and New York Times best-selling author of The Last Black Unicorn will host. The awards show’s 2017 host was Adam DeVine.
Haddish shared the news herself through a video on Instagram. “It’s gonna be off the chain, and you know why? I’m hosting! And you know what that means—it’s gonna be hilarious,” she remarked excitedly.
Not only is Haddish the first black woman to host, she’s also the first woman in three years to emcee since Amy Schumer in 2015. Since the first MTV Awards in 1992, there have been 11 women who’ve helmed the show, and only six people of color: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson, Aziz Ansari, Eddie Murphy, and Will Smith.
Haddish has already had an amazing year. She's slated to star alongside Tracy Morgan in the new TBS sitcom The Last OG, as well as in Universal’s forthcoming comedy Night School, starring Kevin Hart. Earlier in February, it was revealed that a comic book film adaptation of The Kitchen was in the works, starring Haddish and Melissa McCarthy, and Netflix announced that it’s set to produce the animated series Tuca & Bertie, starring Haddish.
The 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards air Monday, June 18 at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. A list of nominees is set to be announced in the coming weeks.
