Tyler Perry is once again putting his money where his faith is.

According to Rolling Out, the filmmaker and philanthropist just donated $100,000 to Bishop Marvin Winans’ Perfecting Church in Detroit, following days of controversy after a fundraising clip from the church went viral.

The uproar started during Perfecting Church’s annual “Day of Giving” on October 19. Winans, who has led the congregation since founding it in 1989, asked members to give what he described as “$1,000 plus one.”

That phrasing left the room divided—some thought he meant $1,001, while others believed it was two separate $1,000 offerings. In the middle of the confusion, longtime member Roberta McCoy came forward with $1,235, explaining that she was giving “in faith” toward the church’s vision.

Instead of simply taking the donation, Winans corrected her in front of the congregation. “That’s only $1,200,” he said, before pressing the point further. McCoy responded that she would try to bring the additional $800 later, but Winans pushed back with, “Well, that ain’t what I asked you to do.” Clips of the exchange spread quickly across social media, where critics accused Winans of publicly shaming a congregant over her offering.

In the days that followed, both Winans and McCoy clarified that the moment had been taken out of context.

McCoy explained, “He absolutely did not rebuke me. There was a correction, because pastor gave instruction on the lines to get into.”

Winans added that he was calling on donors “by increments” so the service could move smoothly, and that he later apologized directly to McCoy. Still, the clip had already reignited broader conversations online about how churches handle fundraising, accountability, and transparency.

That’s when Perry stepped in. The entertainment mogul has a long history of giving back to churches, schools, and disaster relief efforts, often citing his own Christian faith as the foundation for his philanthropy.

His six-figure donation to Perfecting Church arrives at a time when the ministry is still working to complete a new building on 7 Mile and Woodward—an ambitious project that has been in development since 2002.

Reactions to Perry’s contribution have been largely positive, with many praising him for standing by Winans and his congregation during a tough moment.
