Nearly a decade after Girls Trip became a surprise box office hit, Regina Hall says the long-awaited sequel is still on hold—and this time, she made it clear why.
During a recent appearance on Craig Melvin’s Glass Half Full, Hall revealed that Girls Trip 2 is not moving forward because the script still hasn’t reached the level the cast wants.
“Until the script is right and we haven’t gotten that yet,” Hall said. She followed that up with an even more direct assessment: “They have not gotten a script that’s right.” Hall’s comments immediately drew attention because just weeks earlier, co-star Tiffany Haddish had suggested cameras could start rolling sometime this year.
According to Hall, the sequel is not being abandoned, but nobody involved is willing to rush it simply because fans have been asking for it. She explained that the cast and producers are waiting for a story that can stand alongside the original rather than rely on nostalgia alone.
Hall said the film needs to be “funny,” “heartfelt,” and include an unexpected element that audiences will not see coming.
The original 2017 film starred Hall, Haddish, Queen Latifah, and Jada Pinkett Smith as four longtime friends who reunite during the Essence Festival in New Orleans. Directed by Malcolm D. Lee, the movie earned more than $140 million worldwide and helped launch Haddish into mainstream stardom.
Earlier this year, Haddish sounded far more optimistic about the sequel’s timeline. She said she and the rest of the cast had been discussing another movie for years and believed production could begin in 2026. Haddish also blamed the delay on the studio, saying, “It’s the studio dragging their feet.”
At the time, she hinted that the next movie could take the group to an international setting and even floated the possibility of adding new cast members, including Meryl Streep and Viola Davis.
After years of sequel rumors, cast reunions, and promises that the Flossy Posse would return, the future of Girls Trip 2 now depends on whether writers can deliver a script that feels worthy of following one of the most successful comedy hits of the last decade.
