Fans waiting on a follow-up to Girls Trip may finally have something concrete to hold onto.

Tiffany Haddish says the long-anticipated sequel is no longer just talk—and, more importantly, it’s actually funny.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Haddish revealed that she’s read the Girls Trip 2 script and had a strong reaction to it. “They just sent the script,” she said. “It is, to me, funny. I laughed out loud three times, which is very difficult for me to do… I had to put the script down for a minute and come back to it and laugh. It was really good.”

For a sequel that’s been rumored for years, that reaction matters. The original 2017 film—starring Haddish alongside Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Queen Latifah—became a surprise cultural moment.

Centered on four lifelong friends known as the Flossy Posse, the movie followed their chaotic trip to New Orleans for Essence Festival. The film was both a box office and critical success, earning more than $140 million worldwide on a modest budget.

According to Haddish, the sequel is moving closer to production, though the process hasn’t been without its usual Hollywood friction. She shared that she had notes she wanted to pass along but was told the studio wanted to weigh in first. “I was a little bit disappointed in that,” she admitted.

Still, momentum appears to be building. Haddish said she’s been told the plan is to begin filming toward the end of summer. She also confirmed that part of the movie is expected to shoot in Africa.

Regina Hall has echoed similar optimism. During an appearance on Entertainment Weekly’s Awardist podcast late last year, Hall said she believed the sequel would happen, but only if the script lived up to expectations.

“I think it’s really about getting the script right,” she explained. “No one wants to do it if it’s not… funny like the first one.”
