Michael B. Jordan may be suiting up for one of the most iconic buddy cop roles of all time.

According to Variety, the actor is in early talks to take on Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs in Universal Pictures’ upcoming Miami Vice reboot, directed by Joseph Kosinski.

The outlet further notes that Jordan, whose résumé spans from Fruitvale Station to the Creed trilogy, has consistently balanced blockbuster appeal with layered performances.

His most recent project, Ryan Coogler’s horror film Sinners, showcased his versatility, with Jordan pulling double duty as twin brothers Smoke and Stack. The film went on to become the highest-grossing original horror movie in history, bringing in $366 million worldwide.

He’s also at work on Amazon MGM Studios’ The Thomas Crown Affair, where he’s directing, producing through his Outlier Society banner, and starring.

For Miami Vice, Jordan would be joining forces with Kosinski, best known for helming Top Gun: Maverick and the upcoming F1: The Movie. Kosinski’s track record for big-screen spectacle makes him a natural fit for a reboot of the sleek, high-energy crime series. Dylan Clark is producing alongside Kosinski, while the screenplay comes from Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy.

The new Miami Vice film is scheduled for release on August 6, 2027, with production set to begin next year. Universal confirmed the project earlier this year but has not yet announced further casting. The film will be shot for Imax, signaling the studio’s commitment to making the reboot as cinematic as possible.

Originally airing in the 1980s, Miami Vice starred Don Johnson as James "Sonny" Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, a pair of undercover detectives navigating Miami’s flashy nightlife and criminal underworld. The series became a cultural landmark, influencing everything from fashion trends to the visual language of Hollywood filmmaking.

According to the official logline, the reboot will return to that world, “exploring the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami” and drawing inspiration from the show’s pilot and first season.
