The premiere of Maul: Shadow Lord on April 6 quickly put an end to one of the biggest theories connecting the new animated series to The Mandalorian & Grogu and the larger live-action corner of the franchise.

After years of fan speculation, many viewers believed Rook Kast—the Mandalorian warrior introduced in the new series—would eventually be revealed as the Armorer from The Mandalorian. But as The Direct points out, the first two episodes of Maul: Shadow Lord appear to make that impossible.

Rook Kast, voiced by Vanessa Marshall, returns to the Star Wars timeline as one of Maul’s most trusted followers. The character first appeared during the Clone Wars era as part of Maul’s Shadow Collective after he seized control of Mandalore. In the new Disney+ series, Kast helps Maul establish his criminal operation on Janix, the crater-built city at the center of the show.

The popular fan theory gained traction because Kast and the Armorer share several striking similarities. Both wear red-toned Mandalorian armor, both have ties to Maul’s takeover of Mandalore, and both seem to carry lingering distrust toward Jedi.

Earlier material, including Star Wars: The Mandalorian Visual Guide, added even more fuel to the conversation by noting that the Armorer’s helmet features “faux cranial horns, a reminder of the past.” Many fans interpreted that line as a direct reference to Maul’s Mandalorian followers, who decorated their armor with horned helmets after pledging loyalty to him.

That theory ran into a problem almost immediately in Maul: Shadow Lord. In the new episodes, Rook Kast is shown removing her helmet and interacting freely without it. That directly conflicts with the strict beliefs followed by the Armorer and Din Djarin’s sect, the Children of the Watch, who consider removing a helmet in front of others to be a serious violation of their code.

Because the Armorer has repeatedly enforced those rules throughout The Mandalorian, the reveal in Maul: Shadow Lord strongly suggests the two women are not the same person.

Speculation around Mandalorian history has only intensified ahead of The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is expected to expand on the culture and politics of Mandalore when it arrives in theaters later this year.
