Sean Reifel's complicated few weeks just added another chapter. After facing headlines over his decision to leave a Pennsylvania police department to join Love Island USA and renewed attention on his ongoing custody case, the Season 8 contestant is now at the center of a debate playing out inside the villa itself after fellow islander Beatriz Hatz suggested his status as a single father could be a "red flag."
According to Cosmopolitan, the comment surfaced during the season premiere, where Reifel initially appeared to hit it off with Hatz, a Paralympic athlete. While the pair seemed like a natural match on paper, Hatz later expressed concerns during a confessional about dating someone who already has a child. The remark quickly caught the attention of viewers—and Reifel's family, who were watching from home.
TikTok footage from a watch party attended by Reifel's relatives and friends revealed that his sister, Brice Marie, said the group initially supported the pairing because of the similarities between the two contestants.
"I thought they would get along well because he's athletic, she's athletic," she said. But that changed after Hatz questioned whether dating a single parent would work for her.
"And then when she made the comment about him having a kid being a red flag, that's when we were kind of..." Brice said before trailing off, while another member of the watch party noted that Reifel's son is "a big part of his life." Brice later admitted she felt "super bad" watching her brother get rejected during the early stages of the competition.
The exchange arrives as Reifel continues to attract attention beyond the typical reality-TV storylines. Before the season even premiered, Bethlehem officials publicly criticized the former officer for resigning from the police department to appear on the show.
Mayor J. William Reynolds argued that taxpayer-funded training was lost when Reifel left the force, while department policy required a full resignation rather than a leave of absence for participation in reality television.
At the same time, court records highlighted by the New York Post brought renewed attention to Reifel's ongoing custody arrangement involving his young son. The documents showed that he previously sought a formal co-parenting agreement and later relocated back to Pennsylvania, a move that aligned with his stated desire to remain close to his child.
