Just days before Love Island USA returns to Peacock, contestant Sean Reifel is facing backlash from local officials in Pennsylvania after city leaders revealed that he resigned from the police force in order to appear on the reality dating series.
According to Fox 8, the controversy erupted after Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds publicly criticized Reifel's decision, arguing that the city lost both a trained officer and a significant public investment when he left the department. Reifel, an Easton native who joined the Bethlehem Police Department in 2025, is among the cast members set to appear on Season 8 of the hit dating show.
According to city officials, Bethlehem's police department does not permit active officers to participate in reality television programs. Officers who want to appear on a show must fully resign rather than take a leave of absence or temporarily step away from their duties. Reifel's departure created another vacancy in a department already struggling with staffing challenges, according to city leadership.
Mayor Reynolds did not hide his frustration when discussing the situation. "Our police department spent a lot of time training and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy," Reynolds said.
He added that the city was disappointed to lose an officer and noted that the position cannot be filled until next year. Reynolds also remarked, "I never thought I'd see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer."
Reifel himself was introduced in promotional material as a police officer before viewers learned he was no longer employed by the department. In the show's cast trailer, he described his profession by saying, "I'm not a model, not an actor, I'm a police officer actually," adding that he enjoys helping people through difficult situations.
By the time the trailer was released, however, city officials confirmed he had already left the force.
The attention surrounding Reifel arrives during a turbulent stretch for Love Island USA. The franchise has repeatedly found itself in headlines over contestant controversies before and during recent seasons.
