Conor McGregor's latest media appearance has sparked a fresh wave of controversy, with host Jimmy Fallon facing criticism after welcoming the former UFC champion to The Tonight Show to promote his long-awaited return to the Octagon.
McGregor appeared on the NBC late-night program this week ahead of his July 11 fight against Max Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas, marking his first bout in five years. During the interview, Fallon enthusiastically discussed McGregor's comeback and even recalled the pair going out for drinks following a previous appearance. “We’ll have to do it again!” Fallon said.
The conversation largely focused on McGregor's return to competition. “I’m excited,” the 37-year-old fighter said. “Five years out of the game. I’m ready to rock.” Discussing his approach inside the cage, McGregor added, “You have to be calm; you have to be composed. You have to trust your training and your discipline. There’s no hiding in the Octagon.”
But clips from the interview quickly drew backlash online, with critics accusing Fallon of helping rehabilitate McGregor's public image without addressing the controversies that have surrounded him in recent years.
The renewed scrutiny comes less than a year after McGregor lost his appeal in a civil sexual assault case brought by Dublin woman Nikita Hand. In November 2024, an Irish jury found the former two-division UFC champion liable over an incident dating back to 2018, awarding Hand nearly €250,000 in damages. McGregor maintained that the encounter was consensual and later appealed the verdict, but Ireland’s Court of Appeal rejected the appeal in July 2025.
Following the original judgment, McGregor issued a statement acknowledging personal failings while continuing to deny wrongdoing. “People want to hear from me, I needed time,” he wrote on X. “I know I made mistakes. Six years ago, I should have never responded to her outreaches. I should have shut the party down. I should never have stepped out on the woman I love the most in the world. That's all on me.”
He continued, “As much as I regret it, everything that happened that night was consensual.”
The interview controversy arrives during a busy stretch for McGregor. In recent months, he married longtime partner Dee Devlin in a ceremony in Vatican City and officially booked his comeback fight against Holloway, whom he defeated in their first meeting back in 2013.
