Jennifer Lopez kicked off her new Las Vegas residency with a performance that doubled as a commentary on how she’s perceived in the public eye.

During opening night at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on December 30, Lopez paused the show to address long-running critiques about her image—specifically, claims that she’s “always naked” and doesn’t “dress her age.”

“It is funny, I do laugh at some of the things sometimes,” Lopez told the crowd, before listing the comments she says follow her online: “Why does she smile when she takes pictures like that? Why does she always dress that way? Why doesn’t she dress her age?” She then delivered what became the night’s most viral moment, shimmying and joking, “If you had this booty, you’d be naked too.”

However, the reaction to Lopez in recent years suggests that the backlash surrounding her has little to do with her body or stage costumes.

According to The Independent, much of the criticism intensified earlier this year following the release of her self-funded documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told, which accompanied her album and film project This Is Me… Now.

Marketed as a reflection on self-love and personal growth, the documentary drew widespread scrutiny for what viewers described as an overly polished, insular portrayal of her life.

Clips from the film circulated widely on TikTok, including Lopez reminiscing about being “16 in the Bronx,” a moment that reignited debates about the authenticity of her long-standing “Jenny from the Block” persona.

Critics pointed out that Lopez attended private school in Throggs Neck, and many felt the documentary leaned heavily on mythology rather than clarity—touching on past marriages and heartbreaks without fully addressing what went wrong.

The project also revived persistent industry rumors that have followed Lopez for decades, including claims that she is difficult with staff and dismissive toward people she considers beneath her professionally.

Those perceptions were further complicated by remarks from her first husband, Ojani Noa, who publicly criticized Lopez in October after her appearance on The Howard Stern Show.

In an Instagram post, Noa accused Lopez of being unfaithful during their short-lived marriage in the late 1990s and rejected her suggestion that the men in her past were incapable of loving her.

“The problem is not us. Not me. The problem is you,” Noa wrote, claiming he was “honest, faithful” and alleging Lopez chose fame over their relationship. He also said he left the marriage because of “constant lying” and implied that J. Lo cheated on him with Diddy before the marriage was over.
