Rumors that a woman had officially been cast as the next James Bond spread quickly on Wednesday, April 1, after reports claimed that Jessie Buckley would take over the role of 007 in the next Bond film.
According to USA Today, the story gained traction online almost immediately, especially because the upcoming movie is expected to be directed by Denis Villeneuve. But there was one major catch: the report was an April Fool’s Day joke.
The false casting news originated with a satirical article published by Euronews on April 1. Written in a deliberately exaggerated tone, the piece claimed that Buckley—fresh off the success of Hamnet—had landed the iconic role.
Social media users quickly began sharing screenshots and reacting as if the announcement were real before other outlets clarified that the story was part of the annual wave of April Fool’s Day pranks.
While Buckley has not been cast as Bond, the prank came at a time when interest in the franchise’s future is especially high. Daniel Craig stepped away from the role after 2021’s No Time to Die, and no replacement has officially been announced.
The casting speculation has also reignited discussion about what the next Bond era could look like—including who might record the theme song.
That conversation took another turn earlier this year when Noel Gallagher said he would “absolutely” want to write a Bond theme if he were ever asked. The former Oasis songwriter said it would be “an absolute honour” to contribute music to the series. Gallagher also argued that Bond themes “should be done by Brits not Yanks.”
Those comments followed an earlier post from Liam Gallagher, who hinted that Oasis could somehow be involved with the franchise. In December, he responded to a fan online by writing, “It’s happening… it’s the best BOND tune ever.” Whether that was a joke, a tease, or simply Liam being Liam remains unclear, but Noel later confirmed that no official approach had been made.
For now, there is still no new James Bond and no confirmed Bond song.
