Chaka Khan is stirring conversation again—this time over her blunt take on modern pop performances.
During a recent appearance on Jessie Ware’s Table Manners podcast, the legendary singer criticized what she sees as a shift away from vocal ability, arguing that some artists rely more on physical spectacle than singing.
The legendary songstress said the current stage environment has changed dramatically from when she came up in the industry. “These women are doing any and every damn thing on stage and trying to sing, too,” she said.
She went further, adding that performers who lean heavily into choreography and body-focused routines may be compensating for something else. “The ones who are doing the most physicalities, with their butts and stuff, and their body parts, are the ones that usually are compensating for what they don’t have.”
The comments came during a broader discussion about performance standards, in which Ware referenced earlier remarks by Patti LaBelle and Stephanie Mills about keeping shows rooted in live vocals rather than production tricks.
Khan aligned with that perspective, emphasizing that her approach has always centered on singing first. “[Have the] voice. Absolutely. I came to sing, and I came to really do a good job,” she said, describing performing as demanding but ultimately fulfilling work.
The moment adds another headline to an already active stretch for Chaka Khan. The 11-time Grammy winner has just launched I’m Every Woman: The Chaka Khan Musical, a stage production based on her life, starring Alexandra Burke.
The show explores her journey from Chicago’s South Side to international stardom, including the personal struggles she has openly discussed in recent interviews. Reflecting on her past, she admitted, “There were times when I thought, will I make it? Will I live through this?”
At the same time, Khan has also been dealing with the realities of the digital age. Earlier this year, she and her team issued a public warning about fake, AI-generated stories circulating online, urging fans to rely only on official channels for accurate updates and to avoid engaging with misleading content.
