Burger King is making a rare move with one of its most recognizable menu items. For the first time in nearly 10 years, the company has updated the Whopper—without changing what it fundamentally is.
The revised version keeps the same core build: a flame-grilled beef patty weighing more than a quarter pound, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, ketchup, and mayo.
But according to Good Morning America, the Whopper now features a “premium” bun, along with “freshly cut onions and tomatoes, crisp lettuce, tangy pickles and better tasting mayo.” The adjustments are positioned as quality upgrades rather than a redesign of the sandwich itself.
The changes extend beyond ingredients. The Whopper will now be served in a box instead of its traditional wrapper. Burger King says the shift is intended “to ensure it makes it to Guests exactly the way it left the kitchen,” pointing to consistency in presentation and structure as part of the update.
The burger will still be made without artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives, maintaining a standard the chain has emphasized in recent years as it revisits its core offerings.
Tom Curtis, president of Burger King U.S. and Canada, said the updates are tied directly to customer feedback. “Over the past several years, we’ve focused on strengthening our operations and modernizing our restaurants to build a more consistent foundation across the system,” Curtis said in a statement. “With that work well underway, we’re now in a position to thoughtfully elevate our core menu.”
He added that the goal wasn’t to overhaul the sandwich entirely. “The Whopper is an icon, so we didn’t set out to reinvent it. Instead, we elevated it based on direct Guest feedback.”
That feedback has become a central part of how Burger King is approaching changes. Earlier this month, the company launched an initiative that allows customers to call or text Curtis with suggestions, creating a more immediate pipeline between consumers and leadership.
