For years, fans of Boy Meets World assumed the cast remained as close off-screen as they appeared on television. But a new documentary is pulling back the curtain on a friendship that quietly collapsed—and according to Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong, and Will Friedle, nobody is more confused about it than they are.
Entertainment Weekly notes that in the newly released documentary Doc Meets World, the trio says they've spent the last several years trying to understand why former co-star Ben Savage abruptly stopped communicating with them. What began as invitations to join their rewatch podcast, Pod Meets World, reportedly turned into unanswered texts, blocked phone numbers, and complete silence.
The fallout is especially striking given the group's history. For seven seasons on Boy Meets World, Savage's Cory Matthews was at the center of one of television's most beloved teen comedies, alongside Fishel's Topanga, Strong's Shawn Hunter, and Friedle's Eric Matthews. The cast later reunited for Girl Meets World.
Friedle says he refused to let the friendship disappear without a fight. In one of the documentary's most revealing moments, he shares a text sent to Savage after months of silence: "Just FaceTimed you. I'm going to call you EVERY DAY until you pick up or tell me to stop." Friedle says he followed through, calling repeatedly in hopes of getting an explanation.
The actor has been remarkably consistent in describing the situation, previously saying, "We didn't have a fight. There's no falling out. There was no animosity. He just woke up one day and decided, 'I don't want this person in my life anymore.'"
None of the cast members points to a specific argument. Instead, they describe a gradual shutdown that accelerated around the launch of Pod Meets World in 2022. According to the documentary, Savage initially seemed friendly but uninterested in participating.
Over time, responses became less frequent before communication stopped altogether. Friedle even points to his messages changing from blue to green, which he believes indicated his number had been blocked.
Just a few years ago, Savage's life was moving in a dramatically different direction. After stepping away from Hollywood, the former child star pursued politics, running for West Hollywood City Council before launching an unsuccessful Democratic campaign for California's 30th Congressional District in 2024.
Savage, who studied political science at Stanford University, spent much of the past few years focused on public service rather than entertainment.
Despite everything, Fishel isn't closing the door. She says she still believes reconciliation is possible and recently remarked, "I don't think it's the end of our story."
