Amazon Shares 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' SDCC Trailer

Following the arrival of the main teaser for 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,' Amazon has debuted an extensive new look at the series at SDCC.

A week after the arrival of the main teaser for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Amazon has debuted an extensive new look at the series at Comic-Con.

While previous trailers for the series haven’t divulged too much in the way of story details, our latest look at the Prime Video show lays down what to expect from the plot. Crucially, the trailer offers a look at Anson Boon as Sauron, the main villain of J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic works. The trailer also showcases just how huge the scale of the show really is, taking place thousands of years before the novel trilogy and Peter Jackson’s beloved film adaptations.

Excitingly, the trailer ends with a tease of a very familiar looking Balrog, the same type of creature fans will recognize from Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Rings adaptation. The show, which has already been greenlit for a second season, promises to show Sauron’s rise to power and the forging of the Rings of Power at the center of the book trilogy.

The eight-episode first season was filmed almost exclusively in New Zealand, hence the sprawling landscapes on display. It’s scheduled to arrive on Prime Video on Sept. 2, with the second season set to begin production within the coming months.

As Deadline reported, the trailer first debuted at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday during a panel hosted by Lord of the Rings megafan Stephen Colbert. During the panel, someone from the crowd asked the show’s executive producers if they will give Colbert a role in the show in the future. The moment was met with cheers, and one of the EPs got Colbert to sign a contract there and then.
