In leaked audio from a recent stand-up set, comedian and podcaster Akaash Singh responded to online criticism of his wife, Jasleen.
“These narratives, calling your wife a gold digger and a whore and all these other things, it’s a shitty thing,” said Singh in the clip, which can be heard below. “So, I’m going to tell one story that I have never even told her, honestly. She has no idea of this story. My wife and I met in 2014, I was not making much money. I was getting $25 a night doing stand-up, I was on MTV shows that paid dogshit money. If she was a gold digger… I didn’t even have $10 to give the bitch, to be honest.”
He admitted that in 2018, he was “flat fucking broke” at 34 years old. “I probably made $4,000 that entire year,” he continued. “We couldn’t even afford the living room we lived in in New York City. We had to move out of that apartment and move to New Jersey. What’s even sadder than moving to New Jersey is I had to save up money to move to New Jersey.”
Singh said that he and his wife had to stay on her friend’s couch for “almost a month” in order to facilitate the move.
“We were basically homeless for a month,” he said. “I remember, the night before we went to the couch, we had to stay in my apartment illegally. … It’s just me and her sleeping on a hardwood floor, I’m 34 years old, she’s 25 years old. I’m looking at this girl, like, ‘Man, you could go be with an Indian who’s a doctor. Like a real Indian. You’re a beautiful girl, you have so much ahead of you. Me, I don’t know what my life is gonna be.”
At the time, he had thoughts that his dream of becoming a successful comedian might not work out, but he was “too moronic” to quit at this point. He remembered not having anything to give her to keep her warm on that cold October night, but handed her a jacket to use as a pillow.
“She said, ‘What are you gonna to use?’” he said. “And I said, ‘I’ll figure it out.’ She handed me back the jacket. She was like, ‘You take this.’ And then she laid with her head and my chest and her arm around me the entire night. I remember thinking, in that moment... ‘I don’t know if I’m gonna be able to marry this girl, because I’m so broken, I’m in such a bad place, and it’s a dark fucking time in my life. But I know I will never find a girl that loves me this much ever again. And I will never find a girl who rides this hard ever again.’”
Jasleen has been under fire as of late, most notably getting hate from Myron Gaines of the Fresh and Fit podcast, which has itself been criticized for its violently misogynistic rhetoric and antisemitism.
In a tweet shared earlier this month, Gaines, real name Amrou Fudl, referred to Singh as an anti-Asian slur and called his Flagrant podcast co-host Andrew Schulz “AnJew Schulztein.” He shared a number of clips of Jasleen allegedly “making a mockery of him and herself.” Singh previously said that his wife was a virgin when they first got together; meanwhile, she joked on a podcast that she was “popping my pussy and living my best life in these white boy frat houses.”
Jasleen previously said that she met her husband in 2015 and she immediately “felt something really special” between them.
