Hulu and Marvel have teamed up for a new batch of shows based around the comic6 giant's parodic superheroes. Variety reports that Howard the Duck, M.O.D.O.K, Hit-Monkey, and Tigra and Dazzler are all getting their own adult animated shows on the streaming service.
Like the recently axed Netflix/Marvel mini-universe, the four shows will build to an ensemble production called The Offenders.
True to the superpowered team-up theme, Marvel is bringing in a murderer's row of creative talent to helm the just-announced projects. Howard the Duck will be written and executive produced by Kevin Smith and Dave Willis. Smith is famed for his direction of cultishly beloved fanboy stories and Willis was the mind behind animated stoner fare like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Squidbillies. M.O.D.O.K. will be run by comedian Patton Oswalt and Community writer Jordan Blum. Hit-Monkey will come from Blades of Glory directing team Josh Gordon and Will Speck. Tigra and Dazzler is being handled by Girls Trip's Erica Rivinoja and Chelsea Handler. All four series will be executive produced by Marvel's head of TV, Jeph Loeb.
The news of a new interconnected set of Marvel shows comes while the wounds are still fresh over the dissolution of The Defenders. The Netflix series Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Daredevil were all canceled while Jessica Jones carries on. The move was seen as a step away from Netflix as Marvel's parent company Disney hopes to launch its own streaming service.
Pairing with another streaming service might seem hypocritical. However, Disney's upcoming acquisition of Fox will make them a majority shareholder in Hulu.
