It's been a long time since Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit hit American theaters, but it's finally getting a follow-up thanks to Disney's upcoming streaming service, Disney+. Entertainment Weekly reports that Sister Act 3 is currently in the development stages. Insecure executive producer Regina Hicks and Karin Gist of Fox's Star are writing the follow-up to the 1993 Whoopi Goldberg sequel.

Details regarding the plot of the film are currently unknown, but it's sounding like it might resemble more of a reboot than a traditional sequel since Whoopi Goldberg will not be returning to the franchise. “It is our understanding that this is not a continuation and Whoopi is not involved,” a representative for Whoopi Goldberg told EW.

Whoopi Goldberg previously hinted that the third film would be taking a "different direction," telling Good Morning Britain that she likely won't be a part of the whatever the currently untitled movie will become. The door is still open for a cameo, however.

“We’ve been all over Disney begging and they’ve decided that they’re going to go in a different direction with Sister Act. So it won’t be Sister Act 3, it’ll be a brand-new rendition of Sister Act,” Goldberg explained. “And I guess I’ll walk through a scene and that’s how they’ll say I was part of it.”
