Jenna Ortega wants to put the untrue rumor that she’s dating Johnny Depp to rest once and for all.
In a new video uploaded on Monday, the 21-year-old actress was asked about the craziest rumor she’s ever heard about herself during her “Puppy Interview” with BuzzFeed.
“Probably that I was in a serious relationship with Johnny Depp and I wanted everybody ‘to leave us alone,’” Ortega said candidly at the 8:30 mark in the video linked below. “It's so insane to me. I never spoke on that, I never said anything like that. Articles really do just make up their own quotes but I thought that that was pretty hilarious.”
Ortega also said that even one of her Beetlejuice Beetlejuice co-stars caught wind of the rumor that she was dating the actor, who happens to be 40 years her senior
“I was on set with Richard E. Grant, and he came up to me and he just said, ‘Oh, so you and Johnny?’ And I laughed because I don't know that person,” she said.
As explained by Entertainment Weekly’s Lauren Huff, the rumors began when celebrity gossip account DeuxMoi linked the two actors last summer.
A representative for Depp told NME in a statement that the Pirates of the Caribbean star “has no personal or professional relationship with Ms. Ortega whatsoever.”
“He has never met her or spoken to her. He is not involved in any project with her, nor does he intend to be. He is appalled by these baseless and malicious rumours that are intended to harm his reputation and career,” the rep added.
Ortega is currently starring in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, where she’s reunited with Wednesday director Tim Burton. In the newly released sequel, Winona Ryder reprises her role as Lydia Deetz, with Ortega playing her daughter, Astrid.
