The Weeknd was recently spotted out at dinner with two legendary game directors who are responsible for some extremely popular games.
In images and videos shared on his alternate Instagram account, @gene.hackerman, The Weeknd shared some smiley snaps with Hidetaka Miyazaki and Yoko Taro. Miyazaki is the president of FromSoftware and has directed its latest popular game, Elden Ring. Taro is a video game director and scenario writer most known for his work on the JRPG series NieR.
What’s significant about this linkup between these three best-in-class artists is that The Weeknd has publicly shared his appreciation for projects both directors have been a part of. The Weeknd has uploaded footage of himself playing (and beating) Elden Ring in the past, and just last month he shared a video of himself arriving at the endgame of NieR: Automata.
So, what could the linkup mean? There’s an Elden Ring movie currently in the works via A24, with director Alex Garland and actors like Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, Kit Connor, and Jonathan Pryce attached to it. Could The Weeknd be in talks to curate the film’s soundtrack? As for Nier-related properties, could the singer be crafting a theme song for an unannounced game?
Or maybe there’s no project attached to the dinner at all. The Weeknd’s made it clear of his love for video games. Perhaps he just wanted to meet his creative heroes, who could potentially inspire his aesthetic or music going forward.
Back in March, the Weeknd posted a snapshot of himself on a call with Taro.
In other The Weeknd news, the singer got the chance to present the award for Anime of the Year at the 2026 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. The trophy ended up going to My Hero Academia for its final season.
The Weeknd joined a lineup of presenters that included Winston Duke, RZA, Young Miko, Rashmika Mandanna, BamBam, Ten, and Ethan Bortnick.
