Jay Rock has his first-ever Gold album.
On July 17, the Recording Industry Association of America certified Rock’s 2018 album, Redemption, as Gold, which means it has officially moved half a million units.
On the same day, Rock earned several other certifications: Gold ones for the songs “Tap Out” with Jeremih and “OSOM” with J. Cole, and Platinum (1,000,000 units) ones for “Win” and “Wow Freestyle” with Kendrick Lamar. His track “King’s Dead” with Lamar, Future, and James Blake was certified 4x Platinum.
Redemption is Rock’s third studio album. The LP features appearances from Lamar, SZA, and Tee Grizzley.
Jay Rock’s big wins are in line with his former fellow Black Hippy and Top Dawg Entertainment labelmate Kendrick Lamar, who similarly had a big July when it comes to sales. Earlier this month, Lamar’s diss song “Not Like Us” set a record by becoming the fastest rap song of this decade to sell more than 10 million units in the United States.
In December, Jay Rock spoke with TMZ about how Lamar’s wins inspire him. “That’s my little bro,” Rock said. “My boy’s out [of] this world right now. Ever since the beginning, we all knew the potential and where Kendrick was finna go with it.”
“It’s motivational. It’s just to let everybody know y’all gotta get on your toes,” he added. “The GNX album is crazy. From top to bottom, no skips. Even if you put it on shuffle, you [don’t] even have to skip it,” he continued.
