Jack Harlow says that his father started crying when he got the chance to finally meet musician Van Hunt.
During a sit-down with Rolling Stone in which he talked about the most important songs in his life, Harlow delved into the significance of “Dust” by Van Hunt.
“It feels like my earliest memory of my favorite song,” Harlow said. “This song is one of my introductions to music. My dad use to play it when we lived outside of Louisville, so I just have an emotional connection to hearing this song. On the way home, my dad would play it a few minutes from the house, and he’d try and race in before it was over.”
From there, Harlow reflected on getting the chance to meet Van Hunt through his fiancée, Halle Berry.
“I had the chance to meet Halle Berry,” Harlow began. “On the way there, they told me she’ll be with her boyfriend, fiancée, partner, Van Hunt. Obviously, I was excited to meet Halle … but I just grabbed him and just embraced him. I called my dad on FaceTime, and his eyes were watering.”
“Now me and Van are friends,” Harlow concluded. “I shared my album with him before it came out, and he does the same.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Harlow looked back at the impact of Kanye West choosing to collaborate with him during a period of time when there was “a lot of skepticism” surrounding Harlow’s work.
After explaining the significance of Ye’s track “Drive Slow” with Paul Wall and GLC, Harlow opened up about The College Dropout artist publicly embracing him.
“I vividly remember calling my mom when he told me to come work, and he had posted,” Harlow said. “It meant a lot to the people around me. It meant a lot. Especially because it was at a time when there was a lot of skepticism around me, which, you know, there may never stop being skepticism around me. But at the time, it came at a very validating moment. It was nice.”
