Snoop Dogg is giving fans an early glimpse at what to expect from his upcoming biopic, and it won't be toned down.
The hip-hop icon took the stage at CinemaCon alongside Jonathan Daviss, who is set to portray him in the film, to preview the project, which is set to begin filming this summer. While details remain limited, Snoop made it clear the film will reflect his story authentically.
"After my brothers got to tell their story with Straight Outta Compton, now it's my turn," Snoop told the crowd, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film, directed by Craig Brewer, will chronicle Snoop's rise to become one of the most recognizable figures in pop culture, whose career has spanned decades across music, film, and television.
"If we gonna do a Snoop Dogg movie, I gotta get gangster with it," he said before launching into a snippets of some of his best-known songs, backed by DJ Green Lantern. He doubled down on that message with a promise about the film's tone: "My movie is going to be rated R, I guarantee that. So get your parents' permission."
Though Snoop didn't reveal much about the plot or additional casting, he confirmed that production will begin this summer in Los Angeles. He also told attendees to expect a more complete look at the film in the near future, suggesting a trailer could be unveiled next year. The film marks a major step for Snoop's Death Row Pictures, which is producing the project alongside Brian Grazer.
Casting the lead role was a key priority for Snoop, who previously emphasized the importance of finding someone who could capture his mindset during his early years.
"I'm looking for somebody who can embody the spirit when I was that young, rough around the edges," he said in a prior interview.
