Snoop Dogg to Star in Ridley Scott-Produced Thriller 'God of the Rodeo'

Shia LaBeouf was also originally announced to be in the film, though it's unclear whether he's still attached.

Snoop Dogg has been tapped to star in a new Ridley Scott-produced joint, calling the opportunity “life-changing.”

The news was broken by Deadline on Wednesday (March 25), with the publication noting that not only would Snoop be starring in the film, titled God of the Rodeo, but he’d also be co-producing under his Death Row Pictures banner alongside Sara Ramaker. Rosalind Ross will write and direct.

God of the Rodeo, based on reporting by Daniel Bergner, tells the story of an Angola Prison inmate in the late 1960s who takes part in a rodeo put on by the facility, only to come to the realization that the event isn’t the beacon of hope they assumed.

In May of last year, it was reported that Shia LaBeouf would star in the film, which also counts Giannina Scott as a producer. However, it wasn’t immediately clear whether he was still attached to the project.

The film, of course, doesn’t mark Snoop’s first time on the big screen. Over the years, he’s made several cameos, including in 1998’s Half Baked. He’s also been seen in a number of starring roles, including in the 2001 horror film Bones and the 2004 comedy Soul Plane.

“Linking up with Scott Free Productions and working with Ridley Scott and Giannina Scott on God of the Rodeo is life-changing and an honor,” Snoop said in a statement provided to Deadline on Wednesday. “Rosalind Ross brought a story with heart and grit, and that’s what I’m about.”

According to Snoop, Death Row will also be handling soundtrack duties.
