Music producer and The Internet frontwoman Syd has announced that the progressive soul group will reconvene for an upcoming album.
The singer briefly spoke to TMZ while at LAX this week upon heading on the road as a supporting act on Reneé Rapp's Bite Me Tour. During the chat, Syd discussed her new single, "GMFU," and shared that The Internet has occasionally linked up to record new music.
"Between these couple of tours that I’ve been opening on and Steve [Lacy] flying all over the world to make music, we’ve been meeting up in LA and putting in a week or two at a time in between everything," Syd told the reporter. "We’re about to get ready to write some songs when I get back from this trip."
When asked about reconnecting with Lacy, Syd said it’s “more fun” because “he’s not the shy teenager that he was before.”
“He’s more confident with his ideas. He’s singing a lot more, he’s quick to hop on the mic,” she continued. “I love it. It’s helpful when it comes to songwriting.”
Syd added that the group has been "pushing" the Grammy winner to sing more on the next Internet album. Lacy has dropped two solo LPs, Apollo XXI in 2019 and Gemini Rights in 2022, which won Best Progressive R&B Album at the 2023 Grammy Awards.
In Lacy's recent Rolling Stone profile, Lacy shared that his fellow band members had been "hanging out" and plan to soon release their fifth album. The group's producer, Matt Martians, also recalled when Lacy joined the group when he was still in high school.
"When Steve was young, his mom was really protective of him. We were the only people that she trusted Steve to be out the house with when he was 15, 16," Martians told RS.
"He started playing me a lot of the stuff that he had been making on his phone at the time. And I was blown away. I was like, 'This is the type of music you make? This is insane,'" Martians continued. "He was really shy. He didn’t realize how good he was."
