Demi Lovato has recalled the time she received a strange request to perform "Heart Attack" for an American Heart Association — and granted it.
The pop vocalist performed the 2013 single during a 2024 charity event for the health nonprofit organization, which went viral due to its arguably inappropriate nature. During a recent appearance on the Elvis Duran Show which was released on Thursday (March 19), Lovato recalled the experience and shared that she initially pushed back on performing the song.
"I want to say they asked me to sing that," Lovato revealed around the 19-minute mark of the video below. "Because I flagged it beforehand and was like, 'Um, isn’t this not the vibe?' And they were like, 'No, they want to hear it.'"
Lovato performed "Heart Attack" with a smile for event attendees, although the AMA is dedicated to fighting cardiovascular disease.
"Then, of course, people online are like, 'Why did she sing that?'" the singer explained. "And I’m like, 'Y’all, it wasn’t me — I didn’t ask. I flagged it.'"
Following Lovato’s performance, in 2024, a representative for the vocalist told Entertainment Weekly that the live rendition of "Heart Attack" came to be a "beautiful moment" for event guests.
"She spoke on the mind-heart connection. It was a sensitive moment intended to champion the women in the room — the very reason why Demi was at the event," the rep stated. "She did open with a beautiful intro on why she chose the song and addressed the room, talking about the mind and heart connection."
The singer also recently revealed that shopping at grocery stores used to give her panic attacks when she was struggling with an eating disorder.
Lovato talked about the realities of disordered eating on a recent episode of the Chicks in the Office podcast while promoting her new cookbook, One Plate at a Time: Recipes for Finding Freedom with Food.
