Demi Lovato is known for her emotional power ballads, but in her newest era, she’s having a bit more fun.
On Monday, September 15, Lovato announced her ninth studio album It’s Not That Deep. The album was preceded this past summer with its lead single “Fast,” and its latest single “Here All Night,” which dropped last Friday. Lovato revealed the title and cover art in an Instagram post and press release.
On this particular album, Lovato collaborated with producer Zhone, who has worked with Kesha, Charli XCX, and Kylie Minogue. Both of the album’s singles have been more upbeat and dance-oriented, signaling a more pop-centric album.
“This music is a perfect reflection of where I’m at today,” said Lovato in a statement. “I had such an incredible time making this album with Zhone and it was such a freeing experience to let loose and have fun with it. With my past eras, I often wrote cathartic music about heavy topics that I needed to process. When I got back in the studio this time around, those songs just weren’t resonating anymore because I’m not in that place in life. I’m happy, I’m in love, and I just want to enjoy life and have fun. I realized it’s not that deep anymore, and that became the ethos for this album. It’s Not That Deep is meant for late nights and dancefloors, and I can’t wait for you all to dance with me.”
On the cover art, Lovato is seen nude in front of a blue screen, covered up in a pink dress in dry clean wrapping. People around her are taking selfies, playing chess, and socializing, seemingly not noticing Lovato’s presence.
“thank you [Daniel Sachon] and [Imogen Strauss] for helping me to make the cover art of my dreams,” Lovato wrote in her Instagram post’s caption. “we created the most beautifully chaotic scene surrounding me, and you know i had to lock the f**k in.”
It’s Not That Deep arrives to streaming platforms on Friday, Oct. 24
