The Firm's 1997 project, The Album, is now available on vinyl on Complex.
When The Album dropped on Oct.21, 1997, it arrived as one of hip-hop's most ambitious concept projects. Dr. Dre and Trackmasters handled production, with Nas and Steve Stoute serving as executive producers. The supergroup, which consisted of Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown, Cormega, and Nature, created a cinematic, crime-world narrative that leaned into the Mafioso rap aesthetic that Nas had been building since Illmatic—this time with a full crew behind him.
One of the record's most enduring moment remains "Phone Tap," the song's suspenseful construction making it the group’s signature song. Elsewhere, the tracklist pulls in guest appearances from Canibus, Noreaga, Dawn Robinson, and Half-A-Mil, rounding out a project that reads more like a cast than a feature list.
