Kelly Rowland is warning her followers of a fake account pretending to be her and asking for money.
The singer took to her Instagram Story to post a screenshot of an Instagram DM conversation from user @iam.kellyrowland.
“Hey, this is Kelly from Destiny’s Child,” the message read. “I lost my credit card and I need money for a plain [sic] ticket so I can fly to your city to perform. Can you send me some money?”
A follow-up message said, “Hi, this is Beyoncé.”
Rowland responded, writing over the screenshot, “Be careful out here” and “Fake AF!” She added, “And don’t you think I know how to spell P-L-A-N-E!”
Unfortunately, this isn’t something only Kelly Rowland has experienced. The fake celebrity scam messages she highlighted are spoofed DMs or texts mimicking celebrities, asking for money or personal details, according to Know Your Meme.com These scams often include a follow-up message referencing a famous catchphrase to appear genuine. The trend began with a 2021 DaBaby scam shared on Reddit and has grown in popularity since.
While Kelly is unfortunately not touring, Destiny’s Child recently reunited at Beyoncé’s Los Angeles premiere of Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé in November 2023. Rowland, Michelle Williams, LeToya Luckett, and LaTavia Roberson were all in attendance, dressed in "cozy opulence" looks, per the dress code, wearing chrome and black dresses. Footage of the members reuniting for an embrace backstage appears in the documentary’s trailer.
