DJ Screw fans have something to look forward to as the late producer's estate has announced his entire catalog is finally coming to DSPs.
On Friday (May 29), the Houston legend's DJ Screw Originals (Volume 1) was made available on streaming services for the first time ever, and according to his estate, additional mixtapes will also be released over the next five weeks.
"This is for the fans who've always known and for those discovering him now," the DJ Screw Estate said in a statement. "From a local legend to a global icon, his catalogue will now be accessible everywhere keeping his legacy alive one stream at a time."
Previously, fans could only listen to the hip-hop pioneer’s music through physical tapes or unofficial YouTube uploads. The rollout of Screw’s projects will be overseen by his sister, Red.
"More than a catalog release, the rollout serves as a celebration of DJ Screw's enduring legacy and the culture he built," a press release said.
In the 1990s, the Houston native helped reimagine hip-hop from his hometown through his signature "chopped and screwed" sound, which slowed down records and chopped vocals. He was the leader of Houston’s Screwed Up Click, a group that encompassed Big Hawk, Big Moe, and Lil’ Flip.
In 2000, DJ Screw tragically passed away from a codeine overdose when he was only 29 years old.
You can listen to Originals (Volume 1) on all streaming platforms now.
