Frank Ocean delivered this holiday season.
On Saturday, the award-winning artist returned with a special Xmas edition of Blonded Radioon Apple Music 1. The show included excerpts from Ocean’s previous conversation with Wim Hof, a.k.a. “The Iceman”—a Dutch extreme athlete/motivational speaker who specializes in cold therapy and breathing techniques.
Ocean said he spoke with Hof “some time ago” when he was going through stages of grief, and was immediately moved by the man’s energy.
“We spoke for a while about his work, the purpose of grief, and how going into the cold water changed his life,” Ocean wrote on Instagram. “It reminded me of conversations in the studio with players I know. Freewheeling, psychedelic, emotionally charged, intelligent, and generous. I enjoyed listening to him, so in this edit I just let him speak uninterrupted. Me, [Cory Henry], and [Dylan Patrice] played some sounds underneath to heighten the feeling. I added some writing at the end that I did a single take of w Cory in the summer of 2020. I came back and added a few words and parts over the top of that take more recently. Felt like it fit the wabi sabi of Wim’s words. Merry Xmas everyone.”
Ocean also premiered a nearly nine-minute record inspired by Hof and their conversation. You can listen to the piano-driven tune via YouTube.
The Blonded Radioepisode comes less than a week after Ocean unveiled his new Homer and Blonded collections. The former includes high-end Italian-made jewelry pieces, while the latter offers more accessible items like tees and posters.
