Essence Fest is adding another marquee moment to its 2026 lineup with a tribute celebrating the life and music of Aaliyah, led by one of the people who helped define her sound: Missy Elliott.
Festival organizers told local CBS affiliate WWLTV that the Grammy-winning artist will curate a special performance on the closing night of the New Orleans event, commemorating the 30th anniversary of One in a Million and the 25th anniversary of Aaliyah's self-titled final studio album.
The tribute will take place on July 5 at the Caesars Superdome and is being presented with the blessing of Aaliyah's mother, Diane Haughton, and her brother, Rashad Haughton.
Long before either became icons in their own right, Elliott and producer Timbaland helped reshape contemporary R&B through their work with Aaliyah. Elliott wrote and co-produced several of the singer's signature records, including "One in a Million," "Hot Like Fire," and "Best Friends," while frequently referring to Aaliyah as her "little sister." Their relationship extended well beyond the studio, developing into one of the defining creative partnerships of the late 1990s.
Aaliyah's influence continues to resonate nearly 25 years after her death in 2001. Her futuristic blend of R&B, hip-hop, and electronic production helped redefine the genre, while her understated style became a blueprint for artists who followed. Elliott has consistently honored that legacy through anniversary tributes and public reflections on their friendship.
Saturday shifts the spotlight to R&B with Patti LaBelle, Brandy, Monica, Josh Levi, and Leon Thomas before Sunday's performances by Babyface, Public Enemy, George Clinton & Friends, and Doug E. Fresh lead into the Aaliyah celebration.
This year's festival also marks the first under the creative direction of Teyana Taylor, who was named Essence Fest's chief curator earlier this year. Speaking ahead of the event, Taylor said her mission isn't to reinvent the festival but to reconnect it with the atmosphere longtime attendees remember.
“We didn’t come here to change nothing,” Taylor said. “We’re coming here to elevate and add.”
She also explained that she wants the event to “feel like home again,” promising expanded activations, new cultural experiences, and a renewed focus on giving fans “a whole experience.”
