Despite stiff competition from Justin Bieber's comeback single "Yummy," Roddy Ricch has landed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with "The Box." The Compton rapper gained his first No. 1 single with the track, which steadily climbed the charts after continued viral success.
Chart Data reported the news; Bieber's "Yummy" landed at No. 2. As Billboard confirmed, "The Box" brought in 68.2 million U.S. streams and 11,000 digital song sales in the week ending Jan. 9, while Bieber's track garnered 29.3 million streams and 71,000 sales. Elsewhere on the chart, Post Malone's "Circles" drops to No. 3, while Maroon 5's "Memories" sits at No. 4.
"The Box" hit the No. 3 spot the week prior, and early reports indicated it was going to swipe the top spot. On the Billboard 200 album chart, meanwhile, Roddy has climbed back to the No. 1 spot with Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial. This mean that Roddy is the first artist to rank No. 1 on both the singles and albums chart simultaneously this decade.
Bieber congratulated Ricch on Twitter, saying, "You had to go and make a banger smh! Haha ur the man!!"
"Yummy" had something of a messier climb up the charts than "The Box," with Bieber criticized for his streaming strategy. The Canadian pop star joined TikTok and launched an official "Yummy" game in order to get the song to No. 1, telling fans at one point he was "desperate" to debut at the top spot. Additionally, he released several signed "Yummy" CD variants, seven different videos for the song, and shared an Instagram repost in which specific fan-made instructions were given on how to make sure the song beat out "The Box."
Despite Bieber's questionable methods, Roddy Ricch showed his support for the song in a simple tweet. "Stream 'Yummy' by Justin Bieber," the rapper wrote on Saturday. Lil Pump also encouraged his fans to check out the video for the track.
