Method Man Questions What Drake's "Wu-Tang Forever" Has to Do With the Group

While Meth thinks that Drake is "a dope artist," he still felt a bit confused about why the 2013 track was named after the iconic hip-hop outfit.

During an episode of 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony, Method Man said he still doesn’t know why Drake named a Nothing Was the Same highlight after the Wu-Tang Clan.

As seen in the full interview below, Method was asked about the 2013 Drake track “Wu-Tang Forever,” which sampled Wu-Tang Clan’s “It’s Yourz,” although technically it’s also a sample of T La Rock & DJ Jazzy Jay’s 1984 song “It’s Yours.” When asked, Meth said that he likes Drake but expressed a bit of confusion over why the song was named that way.

“I like Drake, I think he’s a dope artist,” said Method Man, as seen in the clip below, during which he also addressed the rumors of there being a version of the song that featured the surviving members of the iconic hip-hop outfit. “He puts out some great music, obviously, [otherwise] he wouldn’t be as big as he is. But when he sent the record… some [of the] brothers was trying to write to it and shit, and I’m sitting there like, ‘I don’t like it.’”

He suggested it wasn’t anything to do with the song itself, but the title of the track, which is named after the group’s 1997 album of the same name.

“I was like, ‘What does this have to do with Wu-Tang Forever?” he said. “I’m not questioning his artistic ability or anything. I’m just saying, for my taste, I was more or less like, ‘I’m not getting on that.’”

Meth added that none of the group knew that the song was going to be as successful as it was, and he wasn’t interested in just getting on it because Drake is as big as he is. In 2013, Inspectah Deck spoke with HipHopDX and said there were plans for a remix of the song featuring the Wu-Tang Clan, and added that they got in the studio to record verses for it.

“When I finally got to hear the song, I was more or less like, ‘Wow, I thought it was a tribute song like, it would be in respect of all eight members,’” he said. “And when I heard it, it was about a girl. … I felt it didn’t have no bearing on the Wu-Tang Clan or Wu-Tang Clan Forever for that matter.”

During the same interview, Method Man spoke about the group’s “final” tour, and was asked if that was really it for the Wu-Tang Clan.

“You never know,” he said. “When RZA put that spin on it, a lot of us scratched our heads. We were wondering what was going on. But for me, optimistically thinking, I think it’s a great setup for the reunion tour.”

Drake, meanwhile, is set to roll out his Iceman album soon.
