Over the last few years, JPEGMAFIA has collaborated with everyone from BTS and the artist formerly known as Kanye West, and now he’s back with another genre-blending album of off-kilter hip-hop.
JPEGMAFIA has been keeping himself incredibly busy ever since he dropped I Lay Down My Life for You, and he’s lost none of his uncompromising vision in the years since. Featuring a distinct blend of his distinctively erratic sampling and provocative lyrics, the self-produced album goes from pretty melodies one moment to bursts of harsh noise the next. Listen to the album here.
To coincide with the release of the record, he also dropped music videos for two immediate highlights from the album, “¥ (Yen)” and “$ (Money).”
In the lead-up to the release of Experimental rap, JPEGMAFIA sat down with Pigeons & Planes to talk about the title of the record. “With Experimental Rap, I just wanted to lay claim to something I already have,” he said. “I’m already the best in the space of experimental rap. There’s no one who competes with me. There’s no one who does what I do. There’s no one who is able to do this, and that’s why I’m not copied.”
Elsewhere in the interview, he shared some comments that led people to believe that he was throwing shade at Earl Sweatshirt. “Other people in this genre, they want to pretend and try to be cool and be like, ‘I don’t want to be experimental rap. I want to be something else. I want to fucking rap like Lucki. I want to make songs that the young people make,’” said JPEG. “I don’t really need to do that. I can just be myself, and I let other people try to figure out who they are at 40 or whatever.”
To support Experimental Rap, JPEGMAFIA is set to head out on a 20-date North American tour with support from Redveil and Matt Proxy. Check out the full list of dates below, and get tickets for the tour here.
