Kendrick Lamar Sports Gauze-Wrapped Hand at Grammys, With Fans Convinced He's Hinting at New Era

A wrapped fist at the 68th Grammy Awards and a wave of cryptic posts from Kendrick’s inner circle have fans wondering whether new music is on the horizon.

Kendrick Lamar recently walked away from the 2026 Grammys with more wins to his name, surpassing Jay-Z and the artist formerly known as Kanye West as the most-awarded rapper in Recording Academy history with 27 career awards.

However, Kendrick’s big wins were not the only statement he made at the awards show. As he went up to accept his award for Best Rap Album for GNX, fans noticed Kendrick’s right hand wrapped in gauze.

Fans began to theorize that Kendrick was hinting at a new era in his career, a theory arguably further bolstered by Kendrick’s close friend and business partner, Dave Free. The pgLang co-founder posted a zoomed-in image of Kendrick’s wrapped fist to his Instagram Story during the Grammys.

It seemed like more than a typical injury; it appeared to be part of his look.

“Kendrick always drives the idea,” pgLang’s style director, Karizza Sanchez, told Vogue in a recent interview about the look, which featured prominent imagery of Kendrick’s fist. “Sometimes it starts with a feeling he’s after, other times he sends a reference image, or a specific piece.”

The Grammy-winning rapper has always been deeply involved in his styling. Stylist Dianne Garcia previously spoke on his involvement during his 2016 Grammy performance, echoing similar sentiments to Sanchez, telling Billboard, “He was involved in the sense that he knew exactly what he wanted.”

Typically, in the tradition of boxing, fighters wrap their hands before putting on their gloves to keep their fingers and joints in place, as their hands will face blunt trauma while swinging on their opponent. Additionally, according to an article in the National Library of Medicine, “a bandaged hand increases significantly the impact force of the punch. The force increases in relation to the thickness of the bandage.” Kendrick was seen with his hand wrapped throughout the 2026 Grammys ceremony.

Another hint was posted on Hitta J3’s Instagram story. The artist, who was featured on the title track of Kendrick’s album GNX, shared a short clip of undefeated four-weight champion Pernell Whitaker’s training routine, captioned with the words “Message from the Boogeyman🩸” (another one of Kendrick’s monikers). Also taking to his X account and saying, “More blood be spilling it’s just paint to Me!!!! 🩸” with a photo of Lamar and his wrapped fist and Chanel suit prior to the award show.

Fan accounts have been predicting a new Kendrick era as of late, and are now fully convinced after seeing his wrapped fist.

Kendrick is no stranger to boxing references. He previously compared himself to undefeated boxer Terence Crawford on his 2024 diss track “Euphoria” while facing off with Drake.

“He’s Terrence Thornton, I’m Terence Crawford, yeah, I’m whoopin’ feet,” he rapped at the time, referencing both Crawford and Pusha T’s real name, Terrence Thornton, who also sparred with Drake during their 2018 feud.

Kendrick has also shown a long-time interest in the sport, having been spotted years ago in a boxing gym showing off his jabs in a video filmed by TMZ.

Coincidentally, Drake has also dabbled in boxing. On a 2025 livestream with Adin Ross, the streamer hinted at Drake stepping into the ring, with fans naturally, albeit misguidedly, assuming it would be against Kendrick Lamar.

Drake brushed off the idea, joking that if he ever fought anyone, it would be “behind closed garage doors.”

Kendrick has also been known to roll out his music subtly.

Boxing became a common metaphor used by fans and media to describe his and Drake’s battle in 2024, which ended with public opinion siding with Kendrick after his smash hit “Not Like Us” topped the charts. On the track, Kendrick rapped, “How many stocks do I really have in stock? One, two, three, four, five, plus five,” referring to the number of diss tracks he had ready to drop on Drizzy if necessary.

Could Kung-Fu Kenny be wrapping his hands for a potential round two? Time will tell.
