M.I.A. has released her seventh studio album, M.I.7, which arrived Friday (April 17) via her independent label, OHMNIMUSIC.
The seven-track project was written across seven locations — Ethiopia, Egypt, India, the United Kingdom, Greece, Australia, and the United States — with each set of songs created over seven days in each place. The album also features contributions from American gospel group Sunday Service.
The release of M.I.7 follows the arrival of its lead single “EVERYTHING,” and comes on the heels of M.I.A.’s surprise appearance at Coachella, where she joined Diplo and Major Lazer for her first major live performance in years ahead of the album’s debut.
Conceptually, M.I.7 is structured around the seven Trumpets of Revelation, with each track representing a different stage of biblical judgment before transitioning into the next. Though not strictly a gospel album in genre, the project is rooted in spiritual themes, drawing from prayer, the Book of Revelation, and imagery tied to the Ark of the Covenant.
Highlights on the album include “JESUS,” a chant-driven track co-produced by longtime collaborator SWICK, and “SACRED HEART,” which features M.I.A.’s mother, Kala, performing a Tamil Christian hymn. Elsewhere, “MONEY” sees the artist interrogating themes of wealth and spiritual economy, while “CIRCLE” emphasizes time and continuity. The project closes with “EVERYTHING,” followed by “30 MINUTES OF SILENCE,” a reference to the seventh seal in biblical scripture.
The album arrives alongside the second collection from OHMNI, M.I.A.’s clothing brand, which continues to explore themes of protection and sovereignty in the digital age. The new collection is available now at ohmni.com.
M.I.A. is set to hit the road later this spring, joining Kid Cudi on his The Rebel Ragers North American tour from April 28 through June 27.
M.I.7 is available now via OHMNIMUSIC.
