Maluma says he's done chasing the "American dream" and is putting his focus back on Colombia.
During a recent interview on Univision's All Access, the Colombian music superstar explained why he's no longer interested in pursuing collaborations with artists from the United States and breaking into the Anglo market.
“I used to really want to collaborate with American artists. I was always, like, super obsessed,” he told influencer Lola Lolita, admitting he was heavily focused on building connections with stars north of the border. "I was chasing what you could call the American dream, right? Not anymore. Now it’s the Colombian dream.”
“It’s my dream, it’s my dream of my homeland, it’s the dream of my grandparents,” he continued. “It’s the dream that has always existed and that keeps my feet on the ground.”
The “Felices Los 4” singer says his priorities have completely changed. Instead of looking outward, he wants to invest his energy into Colombia's booming urban music scene and help elevate emerging talent from his home country.
"That phase of always having to look to the United States to see what's next is over," he concluded. “Now I’m looking towards my country.”
The North American artists Maluma has previously collaborated with include Ty Dolla Sign, Madonna, Black Eyed Peas, The Weeknd, and Jason Derulo.
In other news, the Medellin-bred singer and his partner, Susana Gómez, announced they are expecting their second child together.
Maluma’s latest album Loco X Volver, which translates to “Crazy to Return,” arrived earlier this month.
