Jelly Roll kicked off his birthday with a new ritual that shows just how far he’s come in his health journey.

In a new post shared to his Instagram on Thursday (Dec. 4), the singer shared a video of himself out on a run alongside a friend.

“It's my 41st birthday, y'all, and I'm not saying that because I want birthday presents. I'm saying that because I used to drink and do cocaine on my birthday. I used to do codeine and pills on my birthday,” he said in the clip.

“Now on my birthday, one of my best friends wakes me up and says, ‘Let's go for a fucking run, baby.’ Me and [my friend] Cam Hanes getting these miles in this morning, baby. That's what God can do for you in a couple of years, baby,” he added.

Jelly Roll concluded, “If you didn't enjoy your birthday this year, you can change it by next birthday, baby. I promise you can.”

His birthday run reflects a much broader shift away from the self-destructive cycles that once defined him.

The “Save Me” singer has previously spoken openly about decades of drug use, arrests that began when he was 14, and the long process of separating alcohol from harder substances.

"I had to learn that you could drink alcohol without doing cocaine. It took me a long time to learn that," he told People in 2023. "I've never said that, but that's real. There was a long time where I just assumed, when people told me they drank without doing cocaine, I was like, I thought we only drank to do cocaine."

At the time, he said he still occasionally enjoys a cocktail on special nights but has committed to avoiding drugs entirely.

The birthday run also fits into the transformation he has been pursuing via dramatic weight loss and a new relationship with food.

Jelly Roll, who once weighed over 500 pounds and publicly acknowledging his food addiction, has now shed nearly 200 pounds through discipline and a commitment to exercise.

“Nobody in my house ever had [a healthy relationship with food], so that was the hard part, really fighting that demon at first and getting into that discipline and that commitment,” Jelly told People in October. “But once you get into that discipline and commitment, it’s like an avalanche. Once that little snowball started rolling, it was on its way.”
