Kim Petras Calls Out Label for Allegedly Withholding Her Long-Awaited 'Detour' Album

'I’m tired of having no control over my own life or career,' the Grammy-winning recording artist wrote.

Kim Petras has shared an update on her long-awaited third album, Detour. Unfortunately, fans’ guesses are just as good as hers as to when they’ll finally get to hear it.

On Tuesday, January 20, the “Coconuts” hitmaker took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out her label for allegedly withholding her music from release.

“My album has been done for 6 months but my record label has refused to give me a release date or pay my collaborator’s [sic] for the work they’ve done,” Petras wrote in the first of a series of posts.

She continued, noting that the lead single for Detour is ready to go, along with a music video. “Oh ya I also filmed and self funded a music video over 2 months ago for my next single that they also wouldn’t give me a release date for,” Petras said. She called the clip the “Best MV i’ve ever done” and revealed that fans would see her in “9 looks 6 setups 13 pairs of shoes…”

Petras signed to Republic Records in 2021, after releasing a series of mixtapes and EPs through independent labels BunHead and AWAL. Through Republic, she released the buzzy Slut Pop EP in 2022, and her major label debut album Feed the Beast the following year. That same year, she released Problematique, which was intended to be her proper debut album, but was temporarily shelved after several tracks and demos leaked to the internet.

Elsewhere in the series of posts on Tuesday, Petras requested to be released from the contractual obligations of her label.

“I’m tired of having no control over my own life or career,” Petras wrote. “I want to continue to self fund and self curate my own music. This is why I have formally requested to be dropped by @RepublicRecords.”

Throughout the course of her music career — even during her indie era — Petras has garnered a large fan base within the LGBTQ+ plus community. Back in 2023, she won two Grammys alongside Sam Smith for their chart-topping collaboration “Unholy.”

“I won a grammy 2 years ago [sic]…….. the music is TEA,” Petras said. “Still no support. If it’s not a tiktok trend or 80s revival queerbaiting s**t these labels have no interest in supporting.”

Despite her evident frustration toward her label, she expressed gratitude for her fans and shared her intentions to release Detour eventually.

“My fans have waited long enough. I love u guys,” she said. “I’m dropping Detour regardless.”

Petras’ most recent release came in the form of the pop-driven single “I Like Ur Look” back in October 2025. In November 2025, she held a listening party for Detour at the Hotel Plaza Athenee in Paris. At the time of writing, there is no set release date for Detour.
