It remains a mystery: Why did Rockford Dr. Michael David McKee allegedly get in his car and drive to Columbus, Ohio, to murder his ex-wife and her husband in the middle of the night?

McKee was working in Illinois as a vascular surgeon who was affiliated with OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. His marriage to Monique Tepe wasn't very long-lived, and there was no sign of acrimony, at least not that has been publicly released thus far.

However, in a bizarre turn of events, he has now been accused of murdering his ex-wife and her dentist husband, Spencer Tepe, inside the couple's home in Columbus, Ohio. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated murder, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

In a news release, Columbus police confirmed that they had arrested McKee, 39, for the murders. He was arrested in Rockford "without incident," they wrote.

The motive is elusive. McKee and Monique were only married for two years, although she did file for the divorce action, in 2017, The Dispatch reported, adding that the divorce was resolved a month later, and they didn't have kids.

According to The New York Post, police identified McKee by tracing a vehicle on neighbors' cameras near the murder scene. The vehicle allegedly ended up in Rockford and belonged to him.

After the murders, police in Ohio released an "eerie" video showing a person, whose face is obscured by a hoodie, walking down a snowy alley. Columbus police shared it on their Instagram page. It's not clear whether McKee was that person, though.

"Detectives believe the murder of Mr. and Mrs. Tepe occurred sometime between 2:00 and 5:00 a.m. on the morning of December 30th in the upstairs of their residence," police wrote with the video.

In an earlier news release, police said they were called to the slain couple's home on December 30 for a welfare check. They found two small children, the Tepes' kids, inside the home "unharmed" and both husband and wife shot to death. Spencer was shot multiple times, and Monique "was shot at least once in the chest," Fox News reported.
