The jury in the murder trial of former high school student Karmelo Anthony has found him guilty in the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf.
According to TMZ, on Tuesday (June 9), the Collin County jury rejected Anthony’s self-defense argument for killing Metcalf during a track meet on April 2, 2025. The 19-year-old faces a prison sentence of 5 to 99 years, according to the publication.
The incident happened under a team tent at a track meet in Frisco, Texas, where Anthony, a former student of Centennial High School, encountered Metcalf, who attended Memorial High School. After a tense argument, Anthony stabbed Metcalf once in the chest. Among those who testified during the trial were team coaches, fellow students and police officers, along with surveillance, body camera videos, and phone calls from the day being played in the courtroom.
As TMZ reported, a detective stated that the knife Anthony brandished was legal under Texas law. According to CBS News, upon the judgment being handed down, Metcalf’s friends and twin brother, Hunter, were present in the courtroom. Anthony was tearful as the verdict was read and his parents exited the room after being previously warned by the judge that they couldn’t emotionally react to the decision.
TMZ has also reported that Anthony’s mother, Kala, begged the jury for leniency.
