Ashlee Jenae, the 31-year-old woman who allegedly died by suicide on a trip to Zanzibar with her fiancé, Joe McCann, has been returned post mortem to her family in New Jersey. According to TMZ, the late influencer was returned without her engagement ring and other personal belongings.
Harry Robinson, the father of Jenae, whose real name is Ashly Robinson, told the outlet that he’s uncertain whether his daughter’s belongings will be turned over to the family just weeks after her body was discovered in a villa.
McCann, 45, proposed to Jenae on April 3, two days before she was found dead and hanging by a belt in her room in the Zanzibar property. The couple had reportedly gotten into a dispute during the trip and staff at Serval Wildlife Resort separated them into two different rooms before Jenae’s body was discovered.
The family has sought an independent autopsy, and while results are pending, they are planning a memorial service in New Jersey for Jenae.
Although initially not suspected of any wrongdoing, per CBS News, McCann’s passport was held earlier this month until the completion of results for Jenae’s autopsy. Jenae’s family also revealed that although McCann contacted them with a notification that the 31-year-old was hospitalized, the call about Jenae’s passing came from the hotel.
“That's devastating when your daughter's halfway around the world. We just wanted to know where she was at, who she was with, and that she was OK,” said Harry Robinson. “Just give us something."
Jenae’s family released a statement earlier this month confirming that an active investigation is being conducted involving the suspicious circumstances of her death. “Although we have many questions, we are placing our trust in officials in Zanzibar and are working closely with them as we seek clarity and answers,” the statement read.
